Incorporated in 1872 with the name Smyrna, the area has been through two civil wars, The Battle of Ruff’s Mill on Nickajack Creek and The Battle of Smyrna Camp Ground both fought on July 4, 1864. Both Battles caused a lot of destruction by William Tecushe Sherman’s troops in the area destroying homes, businesses and the 1849 Concord covered Bridge which has since been re-built and is still in use. The Old Camp Ground is now occupied by The Market Village.

  • Silver Comet Trail began construction in July 1998 and opened the first portion of the trail in November 1998 between Nickajack Creek and Hicks Road. The trail was completed in August 2008. It is named for the Silver Comet passenger train that form 1947-1969 traveled the same route. The trail begins in Smyrna, Georgia, running through Cobb county, Polk and Paulding counties, then continuing as Alabama Chief Ladiga trail at the state line. The plan to connect Silver Comet trail to the Atlanta beltline is expected to be completed by 2022.
