Buckhead—despite not always being known as Buckhead—has been established since 1838 when it was purchased by a man known as Henry Irby. Initially known as Irbyville, the area got its name after Irby killed a buck deer and displayed it in the town for all to see. Ever since this event, the neighborhood has flaunted the Buckhead name.

In the late 1800s, Buckhead became quite the rural vacation spot for visitors—especially affluent visitors. Soon, elaborate mansions were being built—even during the Great Depression—parks and theaters were constructed for socialization, and as the years passed, the booming neighborhood continued to grow.

Now, the area continues to attract affluent residents and visitors. An ever-growing area that’s always thriving, Buckhead offers locals and tourists alike premium entertainment, luxury accommodations, and high-end experiences.

The best thing about Buckhead? It’s a quick drive from so many unique spots in Atlanta—including the heart of downtown. Take the MARTA Northeast rail line from three rail stations (Buckhead, Lindberg, and Lenox) to access this unique Atlanta neighborhood.

But if you’re looking for public transportation, you’re in luck, there’s no lack when it comes to transport options!

Education Options: Public & Private

Buckhead offers a wide variety of educational options for all ages, including both public and private school choices. There are more than 15 public and private schools in Buckhead, many of them notable and respected.

Buckhead’s public-school list includes notable options that include, but are not limited to, North Atlanta, Sutton, Rivers Eve, Garden Hills, Sarah Smith, Morris Brandon, and Warren Jackson. Private school options include Lovette, The Goddard School, Atlanta International School, and Pace Academy.

Of these schools, Atlanta International School is considered one of the most unique and notable, boasting 99 nationalities represented and over 65 different languages spoken within its halls. North Fulton High School, established in the early 1990s, is known for its difficult but crucial college-preparatory courses.

Further, Buckhead is home to options for continued education. A Georgia State University facility is located in Buckhead along with the Terry College of Business Executive Education Center, a branch of the University of Georgia.
