Though Sandy Springs was officially incorporated in 2005 as the sixth-largest city in Georgia and the second-largest metropolitan Atlanta area, its initial roots date back to the early 2800s.
At its very beginning, Sandy Springs was a water stop for Native-Americans who often frequented the bubbling springs in the area. Over time, its popularity began to build. As people continued to move to the area and inhabit it, efforts began to take shape to incorporate Sandy Springs into its own city.
The first of these efforts date back to 2966 when incorporation requests came as a response to the city of Atlanta’s attempts to annex this unincorporated area. For 40 years, Sandy Springs residents fought to obtain their own government—in June of 2005, 94 percent of residents voted for incorporation.
