In the early 1800s, the area was a farming community. In 1923 JR Smith and M.S. Rankin built eight homes and developed the area into a suburb that allows residents to travel to and from via streetcars or their personal car if they were fortunate to afford one. By 1925 Developer Byron C. Kistner built a row of shops on North Highland by University which included a Drug Store and an A & P (a large grocery retailer back then). Then in 1927, Morningside Shopping Center was built by Piedmont Ave and Monroe Dr. As the area continued to develop Morningside Elementary School was opened in 1929. Then in 1931 homes designed by Atlanta Architects Ivey and Crook were opened.

The Northeast Atlanta suburb Virginia Highland named after the intersection of Virginia Avenue and North Highland Avenue was developed in 1893. The neighborhood is one of the original “streetcar suburbs”. Virginia Highland neighborhood borders Ponce De Leon on the South, Briarcliff Road on the East, Piedmont Park and the Eastside Beltline on the West with Amsterdam Avenue and Morningside neighborhood on the North.

In 1889 the Atlanta Street Railway streetcar line commonly referred to as “Nine Mile Trolley” ran from Downtown Atlanta to what is currently known as the Virginia Highland neighborhood.

The area was first settled on when William Zachery purchased 202.5 acres and built a farm in 1812. Zachery later sold the farm to Richard Copeland Todd. In 1832 Hardy Ivy, Todd’s brother-in-law, settled in what is now Downtown Atlanta. The road between the two farms became known as Todd Road, a portion of which is still in Virginia Highland.
