Midtown Atlanta in the Past: The History Behind the Neighborhood

Midtown Atlanta wasn’t always its own subsection—in fact, it used to be an intertwined part of both Buckhead and the metropolitan Downtown area. The south half of the Midtown neighborhood was purchased in 1848 and in the late 19th century, Midtown’s Peach Street was transformed into an area called Blooming Hill (which, by the way, was packed with impressive mansions.

Over the course of several decades—and largely due to the commercial developments and the MARTA subway line—Midtown began to explode as its own, unique slice of Atlanta life. Now, it’s one of the most culturally diverse, exciting neighborhoods in Atlanta.

How to Get Around: Midtown Atlanta Transportation Options

Covering about 3.8 square miles, Midtown Atlanta features a high walkability ranking and allows residents and visitors to find most day-to-day amenities and entertainment all within a few blocks of where they’re living.

However, there are plenty of public transit options available, too. Midtown is serviced by the MARTA system, which means there are plenty of rail transit stations and bus lines offered in the area. Travelling to Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport? Midtown Atlanta is only approximately fifteen minutes drive, during non-heavy traffic, to the Airport. Also, there are scooter rentals and bicycle rentals available.
