Your Guide to Marietta: Everything You Need to Know About Marietta, Georgia, History & More

Prior to 1824 homes were built in an area near the Cherokee town called“ Big Shanty” which is now part of Kennesaw City. In 1833 the first plot was laid out with the courthouse centering the town which was common then. However, it was not until December 19, 1834 that the community was legally recognized.

The city was incorporated in 1852 and Politician and Businessman John Glover, who moved to Marietta in 1848, was elected as its first Mayor. Then in 1851 The Georgia Military Institute was built and then in 1855 the first bank was opened. Unfortunately, much of the city was destroyed on three different occasions in the 1850’s. However, Marietta had already recovered from the fires by the beginning of the civil war in 1861.

The hub for the new Western and Atlantic Railroad was Marietta which caused the business to boom. However, in 1842 the hub was then moved to Atlanta in a decision made by the new railroad management.

James Andrews who was working with Union Army soldiers came to Marietta in 1862 along with some 24 Union soldiers. They spent the night at The Fletcher House Hotel which is now the Marietta Museum of History. These men later became known as the “Andrews Raiders” after they seized the train, then boarded with other passengers on April 12, 1862 with the intention of destroying the railroad on their way to Chattanooga. They hoped to overthrow the Confederate hold by destroying the railroad and cutting of Chattanooga from Atlanta. Andrews and the raiders stole “ The General” (a wood-burning locomotive) engine and the car behind it that was carrying the fuel and began what we now know as the Great Locomotive Chase. Their plan was unsuccessful and they were captured, tried as spies and some hanged. The Marietta cemetery is the burial ground of over 3000 Confederate soldiers who were killed during the battle of Atlanta. The City of Marietta also has an app called “Mymarietta” which you may download to view. Some of the app features are; pay your power bill, view power outage maps and pay your property taxes.
