Inman Park in the Past: The History Behind the Neighborhood

1889 the first street trolley system providing transportation to and from Downtown Atlanta was established and ran along Edgewood Avenue.With the connection of a planned suburb to the city in mind via streetcar the Inman Park neighborhood plan was conceived. Joel Hurt (1850-1926) a Real Estate developer and civil engineer designed and plotted the Inman Park neighborhood in 1889. Hurt wanteda neighborhood similar to some he had seen in other parts of the country such as San Francisco. The Picturesque streets and Victorian homes made Inman Park a destination for some of Atlanta’s affluent families.

The East Atlanta Land Company purchased 130 acres east of Atlanta. The planned suburbwas developed and Joel Hurt named the suburb Inman Park for his business associate and friend Samuel M. Inman a cotton broker and financier. It became Atlanta’s first streetcar neighborhood.

Post war during the 1950s and 1960s when automobile ownership was more available, upper class, middleworking-class whites flee to the suburbs leaving behind poor and minorities which resulted in an economic crisis in those neighborhoods.

The restoration of the Beath-Dickey house was instrumental in transforming the Inman Park neighborhood once more into a desirable intown neighborhood. The Beath-Dickey house built in 1896 as a multi-unit rental building for John M. Beath was restored byinterior designer Robert Griggs and his partner Robert Aiken who purchased the home in 1969 and converted into a single-family home.

The neighborhood has attracted lots of professionals and active lifestyle individual wanting to be near the beltline. Today it is still known for is charming Victorian style architectural homes along with craftsman, bungalows, townhomes, lofts and condos.

Getting to and from Inman Park via public transportation is easy via MARTA using the
Inman Park/Reynoldstown MARTA Station. Both MARTA train and bus service the Inman Park Neighborhood.

Although some residents drive around the neighborhood, biking, Walking, scootering, rideshare are also popular ways to get around.
