Old Fourth Ward is a historic neighborhood in the city of Atlanta. Best known as the birthplace of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., it is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Atlanta.

The name Old Forth Ward came about from the mid-1800s when an ordinance that was adopted by City Council in 1854 divided Atlanta into five wards. Over the years, the other wards and their names changed. However, today Old Forth Ward remains the only ward that kept its original name.

As one of Atlanta’s Larger neighborhood, Old Fourth Ward (O4W), is bordered by the Atlanta Beltline to its East near freedom Parkway, Inman Park and Poncey-Highland, Piedmont Avenue to its West, Ponce De Leon Avenue to its NorthandGrant Park to its South.

The gentrification of Old Fourth Ward started in the 1980s and is still ongoing today. The area has seen an influx of new townhomes, apartments, retail, and single-family homes especially near the Beltline and ponces City Market.

How to Get Around: Old Forth Ward Transportation Options

The walkability score for Old Fourth Ward is 86% which is relatively high. However, bicycle, scooter, rideshare, drive and MARTA are also other options for transportation. If taking MARTA, you would need to take MARTA Red or Gold line to North Avenue Station and from there you are just about a mile and a half to the heart of Old Fourth Ward. You may also take MARTA bus route 899 to Old Fourth Ward.

Many people also use the Eastside Beltline to explore other parts of the city by riding their bikes, walking, jogging, or skateboarding.
